Early life and background

Alia Bhatt was born on March 15, 1993, in India. She is a member of the renowned Bhatt family, with her father being Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt and her mother being British actress Soni Razdan. Her father has Gujarati heritage, while her mother has a mix of Kashmiri Pandit and British German ancestry. Alia holds British citizenship. She has an older sister named Shaheen and two half-siblings, Pooja and Rahul Bhatt. Notably, actor Emraan Hashmi and director Mohit Suri are her paternal cousins, and producer Mukesh Bhatt is her uncle.
Alia received her education at Jamnabai Narsee School, although she decided to drop out of twelfth grade to pursue a career in acting.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Alia has described it as modest and down-to-earth, contrary to what some may assume due to her family’s background in the film industry. She stated, “I had a rather grounded and modest upbringing. I didn’t get the pleasures that people assume I would’ve got because I am Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter.” During her childhood, she did not share a particularly close relationship with her father. Soni Razdan, her mother, raised her and her siblings mostly as a single parent, as Mahesh Bhatt was not deeply involved in their lives. Alia mentioned that she didn’t miss her father much during her childhood because she didn’t have a strong connection with him. Their bond grew closer only after she embarked on her journey as an actress.
Alia’s passion for acting began at a young age, and she discovered it while rehearsing for the school choir in kindergarten. She also started taking dance lessons at Shiamak Davar’s institute. Her first acting experience came at the age of five when she briefly portrayed the younger version of Preity Zinta’s character in her father’s production, “Sangharsh” (1999). Recalling the experience, she humorously noted, “I don’t remember much of the shoot. I would go to the sets only for the food.”
At the age of nine, Alia auditioned for a role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film “Black” (2005), although she did not secure the part. Three years later, at the age of 12, Bhansali cast her opposite the 20-year-old Ranbir Kapoor for their debuts in his film “Balika Vadhu.” However, the film was ultimately shelved, and their debuts were delayed.

Personal Life:

Alia Bhatt has had her fair share of challenges, including facing criticism and online trolling for being perceived as a beneficiary of nepotism within the Hindi film industry. When asked about how she handles such negativity, she has responded, “Of course, I felt bad. But feeling bad is a small price to pay for the work that you are respected and loved for.”

One notable incident occurred during an appearance on the talk show “Koffee with Karan” in 2014 when Alia incorrectly named Prithviraj Chavan as the President of India. This led to widespread trolling of her intelligence, which some described as an extension of the “dumb blonde” stereotype. Alia responded to this by starring in a satirical YouTube video for All India Bakchod titled “Alia Bhatt – Genius of the Year.” Journalist Malavika Sangghvi noted that by poking fun at herself, Alia effectively countered her critics and even endeared herself to them.

Early in her career, Alia Bhatt was reserved about discussing her personal life, often stating that she would not publicly talk about her relationships. While she didn’t confirm her relationship with actor Sidharth Malhotra despite media speculation, she spoke fondly of their bond in 2019 after they had broken up.

In 2018, it was revealed by her co-star in “Brahmāstra,” Ranbir Kapoor, that they were dating. The couple eventually tied the knot on April 14, 2022, in a traditional Hindu ceremony held at their Mumbai apartment. In November of the same year, Alia gave birth to their daughter.
